FROM THE BUSINESS
What is your name?
Nedra Deadwyler - Founder of Civil Bikes
Where is your business located?
Atlanta, GA - We are a mobile operation + change our start locations based on each event or tour!
What inspired you to start the business?
We were inspired by the amazing history of Atlanta, a prominent Southern city since its beginning. We believe that by using both history, culture, people, and place we can bring people together and create a connected community without boundaries that offers a real representation of all the people that have made Atlanta what it is today. In all my travels and new starts in other cities, walking and biking assisted in me learning both geography and navigation of the locations. Both walking + biking were at the center of making my experiences come alive. I had an inspirational moment while visiting historic sites and realized the best way to engage history and place was not in a car but walking or biking! A few months later, I was planning Civil Bikes!
What about your business are you most proud of?
I am proud that it goes beyond tourism but is about making social impact- redirecting money back into communities during tours and that we solely focus on unseen and under-recognized stories.
What do you enjoy most about running your business?
The individuals that we have met during this process have been an important part of building, developing, changing, maintaining Civil Bikes. I enjoy the conversations and what they mean to folks who want to engage deeper.
What challenges have you faced as a business owner?
Marketing and making money! Getting beyond this being a one woman show!
What do you think makes your business unique?
Our focus on building community and creating social impact is what makes us different and unique from other tours.
If you had to describe the business in 3 words, what would they be?
Authentic, engaging, and connected.
