Testimonial Tuesday: Brandy + Greg

image

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: We both work long hours and I was in the middle of a tough semester in grad school. On top of that, we had a hard time deciding on a destination and with our busy schedules, it was hard to plan something on our own. As a result, our trip kept getting pushed back month after month. When we saw a news segment on Pack Up + Go we knew we found the solution and booked that day!

Q: Did you have hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A:  No, we were excited! We did not care where we ended up because we were confident we would have a great time anywhere. I was actually less nervous about the travel plans with Pack Up + Go than I have been in the past with travel I booked on my own. The only thing we had to worry about was packing a bag and showing up to the airport on time!

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: Yes! We guessed a million places before opening the envelope. Our destination did cross my mind among many others. Greg was sure we would be going to Kansas City. I thought we could be going anywhere from Louisville to Portland but my final guess did happen to be correct (New Orleans).

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some perceptions about your city prior to the trip?

A:  I had always thought about New Orleans as a drinking city (which it is) but it is also so much more! We learned a lot about the history of the city during our stay. We loved the atmosphere all around.

image

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: I let Pack Up + Go know that we had one vegan traveling with us. We loved that vegan restaurant recommendations were included in our packet! It really helped navigate the food situation which can be difficult sometimes! We also told Pack Up + Go know that we love doing historical tours and they scheduled an AMAZING tour of the Garden District. It was really perfect.

Q: What did you like most about your travel accommodations?

A: Everything! We stayed at the Ritz Carlton and it was better than we could have imagined. We would have been happy staying in the hotel the entire trip, it was so nice.

image

Q: What did you discover on your own (not on your itinerary) in your destination that you feel is shareworthy?

A: There is so much going on in the city all the time. We came across a lovely little mini food festival on a random Wednesday night. There were great local food vendors and lots of live music.

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: It is hard to choose! I love the surprise element and just exploring the city.

image

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: We learned that planning travel does not have to be stressful or time-consuming!

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: It was fun explaining to family and friends that we were going on a surprise vacation! People would ask “Where are you going” and we would say “We have no idea!”. Then explain the concept. Even on the trip, it was fun explaining to people how we ended up there. Great conversation starter. I would describe Pack Up + Go as a surprise, stress-free travel agency. Everything is taken care of for you so you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Q: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go on a surprise getaway

A: Just do it! You will not regret it!

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: I was hoping for a fun, exciting adventure for my husband and I’s wedding anniversary.

image

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: I had no hesitations but my husband was a nervous wreck! He was afraid we’d get sent somewhere we didn’t like or that we wouldn’t “get our money’s worth.”

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: My husband guessed Boston. I really had no clue. We were both very surprised and excited to find out we were going to Philadelphia.

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

A: I thought that Philadelphia was going to be pretty much like every other bigger city I’ve been to, but it was so different.

image

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: I felt like whoever wrote the city guides included in our packet knew us personally! There were so many places on there that were right up our alley. Pack Up + Go really took our interests into consideration. The fact that they and the hotel also wished my husband and I a happy anniversary was just the icing on top.

Q: What did you like most about your travel accommodations?

A: I absolutely LOVED the luxury that was our hotel. From the lobby all the way up to our room, we felt like absolute royalty. To know that we got such a nice hotel without even having the highest budget was just amazing.

image

Q: What was your favorite experience that we recommended for you?

A: Visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art was probably my favorite activity. Not only is it a Philadelphia landmark, but it’s also breathtakingly beautiful.

Q: What did you discover on your own (not on your itinerary) in your destination that you feel is share-worthy?

A: Harbor Park in Penn’s Landing is definitely a must see for anyone who visits Philadelphia in the summer.

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: It’s so hard to pick just one favorite part of our trip. Everything from opening the envelope all the way until we headed home was amazing.

Q: If you could do the trip over again, what would you do differently?

A: If I could do the trip over again, I’d try to squeeze in more restaurants and activities into those three days. There’s so much we didn’t get to do.

image

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: I learned a lot about the rich history of Philadelphia that I had no idea about.

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: I have raved about my Pack Up + Go experience to just about everyone I’ve come in contact with since I booked our trip. I tell everyone what an amazing experience it was from beginning to end. Some of my friends and family members are now booking Pack Up + Go trips of their own!

Q: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go on a surprise getaway?

A: I would tell them that it is truly a one of a kind experience. It’s so nice to not have to worry about planning anything. All you have to do is focus on having a good time. Plus, the excitement of waiting to know where you’re going and not finding out until the day you leave is like no other excitement you’ll ever experience. Everyone could use a little adventure once in a while!

Testimonial Tuesday: Amanda + Scott

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: I randomly saw an ad for it scrolling through Facebook and loved the idea. I couldn’t stop thinking about the concept over the next few days so I got on and booked a trip…we had been wanting to go somewhere but never got around to actually choosing when and where.

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: No hesitations here…my boyfriend probably thought I was crazy because I talked about it 24/7 leading up to it but as it got closer I think we were nervous and excited all at the same time!

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: I totally thought we were going somewhere in the Northeast and Savannah GA also kept popping in my head…I was completely shocked to go to San Diego because I had a trip to CA planned for the end of that month.

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

A: We were both really excited when we found out the location. Neither one of us has ever been there prior to this trip and we were excited to get out of the Midwest and to see a beach!

image

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: Everything!! I mentioned in the survey that it would be cool for us to go to a harbor town, and that we loved trying new and different foods and drinks….I also mentioned that my boyfriend had a huge sweet tooth and there was the cutest cupcake shop right across from our hotel.

Q: What did you like most about your travel accommodations?

A: I loved that we had an early flight out and late flight home because it gave us the most time possible to explore. Our hotel was AMAZING!!! Hotel Z…it is just the cutest little boutique; they have a free shuttle service, give you robes and slippers and the beds are SO comfortable!!

Q: What was your favorite experience that we recommended for you?

A: Coronado Island is where we had the most fun I think…we ended up spending an entire day there. We took the ferry over after lunch and stayed until late evening walking the beach, stopping in little shops, getting ice cream and visiting the Hotel Del Coronado which I think everyone should experience! There is so much history there, we ordered two books about the place off Amazon because we were so intrigued! :)

Q: What did you discover on your own (not on your itinerary) in your destination that you feel is share-worthy?

A: We spent a lot of time walking through Seaport Village which was really fun to both of us. It goes through the harbor which we loved the vibe, we got souvenirs in the shops, did a wine tasting and had lunch nearby.

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: All of it!! The hotel was amazing and in a great location, Coronado Island was at the top too but we both truly loved it all. We did a Harbor Tour on the last day and that was really interesting too!

image

Q: If you could do the trip over again, what would you do differently?

A: Probably nothing! We waited to open the envelope until we got to the airport which I was set on!! The only downfall is that we wish we had more time there!

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: That I actually enjoyed not having to plan any of it!! I like to be in control and have details figured out so it was a nice change. Aside from that, we learned a lot about the city while we were there.

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: So. Much. Fun. It was the first trip my boyfriend and I took together in over 3 years so it was really exciting for us, it took the pressure off of us having to agree on a place to go and we got to have a good time together without having to hammer out all the details of it!

Q: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go on a surprise getaway?

A: Just Do it!!! And when you get home plan to do it again!! They definitely know what they are doing and really make the experience personalized!

Testimonial Tuesday: Heath + Margaret

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: Heath and his colleagues were talking about your website at lunch one day. He came home and told me about it. We decided that now that we were empty nesters, it might be fun. We love to travel and liked the idea that someone else were going to make the plans. We were looking for a new adventure!!

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: No, we really had no hesitations. Our only concern was that because we picked a budget on the lower end, we wouldn’t have the experience we were hoping for. We really did not want to take a train or bus. We were sure we would have a good time because we love to travel together. This time the anticipation of the trip was a lot of fun. We had many conversations about where we were going and what we were going to do. We also did a small contest on Facebook. We posted the information that we had (except the weather report). We told our friends that the first person to get the destination right would win a prize from that city. This got all of our friends talking and as excited about our trip as we were.

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: From the beginning, we guessed Chicago because we noticed that you send a lot of people there. We were also thinking New England somewhere. Once we got the weather report, we were pretty sure that we were right with Chicago. So, no, we weren’t that surprised when we opened the envelope.

image

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

A: We knew Chicago was very large, so we assumed it would be a lot like NYC. We had never even considered a trip to Chicago, so we had no preconceived notions of what to expect. We knew we wanted to see a baseball game, so having a city with 2 baseball teams was good news for us.We departed from the closest airport which was helpful. The hotel was geared towards adults and couples. In the survey we specified good food and cultural attractions as activities that we enjoyed. Chicago certainly had both of those options.

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: We departed from the closest airport which was helpful. The hotel was geared towards adults and couples. In the survey we specified good food and cultural attractions as activities that we enjoyed. Chicago certainly had both of those options.

image

Q: What did you like most about your travel accommodations?

A: The direct flight was easy. The Palomar Hotel was perfect for us. It was in a beautiful part of the city where we felt perfectly comfortable walking. It was across the street from a subway station and at a major intersection for buses.

image

Q: What was your favorite experience that we recommended for you?

A: The Art Institute of Chicago was on the itinerary, so we made this our first stop.

Q: What did you discover on your own (not on your itinerary) in your destination that you feel is share-worthy?

A: We were able to get tickets to the Cubs baseball game on our second day in Chicago. We really enjoyed immersing ourselves into the local culture. Sports fans tend to be very friendly people, so we had a good time cheering on the World Series Champions.

image

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: Being together on a new adventure. We discovered a new city that we have never even considered before. This experience is something we will talk about for years to come.

Q: If you could do the trip over again, what would you do differently?

A: We really can’t think of anything that we would do differently.

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: Chicago is a much nicer place than we thought it was going to be. If we ever plan our own vacation to a major city, we will make sure that our hotel is near a subway station.

image

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: We have already told them that is was fantastic. It is a unique and fun travel experience. We would tell them to let go of the planning and just “go with the flow”. (If you knew us, this is a very big deal. We plan everything.)

Q: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go on a surprise getaway?

A: "How bad could it be as long as you are with someone you care about and have fun with?“

Testimonial Tuesday: Matthew + Sarah

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: Go somewhere I have never been. Adventure, fun, new experiences.

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: Extremely nervous. That was part of the fun. For an entire month, my wife and I speculated on where we would go. It was a lot of fun. That experience was a big part of why we did it.

image

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: We thought it might be Charleston SC. We were very surprised. My wife has wanted to go to Savannah for some time. I just wanted to go somewhere I have never been and I was not disappointed.

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

A: It was very old, and lots of things to do and see. The food would be amazing and it was.

image

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: We got exactly what we wanted. We wanted an old city with lots of charm and good food. We wanted to get out into it and see it. We wanted to meet new people and have fun.

image

Q: What did you like most about your travel accommodations?

A: We didn’t spend much time there. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. One amazing thing about the hotel was that they knew this was for my birthday and they left a beautiful note and a bottle of wine in our room. I specifically made sure to thank them for that.

Q: What was your favorite experience that we recommended for you?

A: Seeing all of the squares that Savannah had. The tour was worth the money. I wish we could have eaten at all of the restaurants that were recommended.

image

Q: What did you discover on your own (not on your itinerary) in your destination that you feel is share-worthy?

A: We didn’t really discover anything new. We wife and I both like haunted locations so we knew about Bonaventure Cemetery from various tv shows. That was the one thing we made sure we did.

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: #1 was the anticipation of where we would be going. #2 was just how easy it was. Made it very easy to just enjoy ourselves. Making travel and hotel plans are not fun at all. Since we didn’t have to do that we could concentrate on why we took the trip.

Q: If you could do the trip over again, what would you do differently?

A: Longer stay.

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: I am not too old to learn something and I still know how to have fun.

image

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: We have said it was the most fun we have had in a long time. From the minute I purchased the trip on your site the speculation began. For one month this was our main focus. “Where will they send us? Maybe here, definitely not there, what about here?” It was just like Christmas when I was a child. We loved it!

Q: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go on a surprise getaway?

A: Take a chance. As life goes on you start regretting the things you didn’t do. Life can be summed up as 2 dates with a dash in the middle. Make that dash count!

Testimonial Tuesday: Dorothy + Zach

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: We needed a getaway before we dove into wedding planning! the trip was a gift from my fiancé for Christmas/my birthday!

image

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: Absolutely not! After reading the testimonials, we had no hesitations letting the Pack up N’ Go team take over! We were so excited and told everyone we knew about this great concept and the trip did not disappoint!

image

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: The March weather forecast sent us for a loop- 80s and sunny? We were convinced somewhere in Texas but were DELIGHTED with Denver! It had been on both of our bucket lists for the food, drink and scene. We had friends recently move out there for work and had only ever heard great things.

image

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

A: We were pumped just from what we knew… then we opened the envelope and explored all the suggested itineraries and got even more excited. We sat at the airport bar and had a [Colorado] beer and told the waitress all about what we were doing. We could not contain our enthusiasm. We knew the town was full of history, food and drink- exactly what we were looking for.

image

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: The itinerary was almost perfect for us. We were registered for a walking food tour which helped us get out and explore. We are two walkers who like to go get lost in new places and find hole-in-the-wall places, often recommended by locals. All the suggested spots made us feel local. On top of that, our hotel knew we were celebrating life with an engagement and birthday, so they had chocolates in the room. Our pre-set dinner reservation even came with a happy birthday cake! It could not have been more special for us.

Testimonial Tuesday: Anne + John

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: We were planning our wedding and wanted to go on a quick trip right afterward to celebrate since we couldn’t travel extensively until the summer. However, we were so burnt out from wedding planning that we just couldn’t plan anything else! So when I found Pack Up and Go, I knew we had to try it!

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: I am a control freak, so yes. But once we filled out our survey and everything was out of my hands, I had to let it go!

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: Based on the weather, we thought we would end up in Phoenix or Charleston. We were so surprised when we opened up the envelope and found out we were going to Denver!

image

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

image

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: The hotel where we stayed, Hotel Monaco, was beautiful, friendly, and centrally located so it was easy for us to get around Denver.

Q: What was your favorite experience that we recommended for you?

A: Nothing - we went to Snooze twice, since we liked it so much!

image

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: Our favorite part of the trip was being together in a new city as newlyweds!

Q: If you could do the trip over again, what would you do differently?

A: We would go for longer!

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: We learned that there are a lot of cities in the country that we need to explore. And we learned that you can see the mountains from inside the city of Denver.

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: We have been telling all of our friends and family that this is an amazing way to travel - it takes a lot of the stress off of the planner and adds a whole new element of surprise!

Testimonial Tuesday: Carolyn + Allison Walsh

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: My sister and I decided to try a Pack Up and Go trip when we couldn’t decide on a location for our annual “sister’s trip.” We decided it would be fun to try something new, as well as to explore a city we hadn’t visited before. We wanted to spend time together while seeing all that a city had to offer, so we chose “action” and “culture” as our travel styles and then selected a variety of interests, from visiting museums to live music to fitness.

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: Not really! Our only fear was that we might end up somewhere colder than where we already were (we traveled in December and are from the north east), But we stated that somewhere warmer would be preferable so we weren’t too worried.

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: We had guessed that we would be going to New Orleans, and we ended up going to Nashville! We were surprised!

image

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

A: We knew that there would be a LOT of live music, as well as good barbecue! Outside of that, we didn’t know much about Nashville.

image

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: When we completed our survey we had included that we love donuts, and we opened our packet there was an entire insert dedicated to donut shops in Nashville! This alone made the trip worth it to us :) We also felt that the destination city was thoughtfully picked based on our survey selections. We were able to explore museums, local shops/restaurants/breweries, live music, and historical sites. Our packet even included a recommendation for a yoga studio, which we was great because we had indicated fitness as an interest!

Q: What did you like most about your travel accommodations?

A: Our hotel was centrally located right in downtown Nashville. We were one block away from the Grand Ole Opry, and were able to easily walk to museums and restaurants.

image

Q: What was your favorite experience that we recommended for you?

A: Our absolute favorite was the list of donut shops, but we also loved the Johnny Cash museum! Our packet also included a walking tour of local breweries, which made for a really fun afternoon.

Q: What did you discover on your own (not on your itinerary) in your destination that you feel is share-worthy?

A: We happened to be in Nashville when the Porter Flea Market was open for the weekend. We loved perusing all of the local products. We found a local artist who creates wall pieces made from wood from old Nashville homes, we both bought pieces and are reminded of our great trip every time we look at them! The artist recommended a bar to us that was opening that weekend – the Public House in the Urban Cowboy B&B. We got some great drinks here, and also ran into the cast of the TV show Nashville!

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: We honestly loved the whole trip, but I think having the recommendations from the local guides in our packet lead us to our favorite places!

Q: If you could do the trip over again, what would you do differently?

A: I’m not sure that we would do anything differently. I’d like to try the road trip version soon!

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: We learned to be flexible! We usually plan every last detail of our vacations, so it was hard going into this blind. However, we had so many suggestions in our packet that we were able to leave feeling like we saw and did everything that we would have planned to do if we had known the destination all along! It was nice learning not to worry about trying to plan every last detail before we left!

image

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: I always tell them that it’s the perfect option when they’re looking for a quick getaway. You choose a price that you’re comfortable with and then get to explore a new place with recommendations from locals so you don’t miss anything! I always emphasize the value of the information in the packet – it was all so thoughtful and detailed that our trip would not have been the same without it. Pack Up and Go doesn’t just choose where you’ll be vacationing, they take the time to plan out what you can do during your time away in a way that is very thoughtfully tailored to your own interests.

Q: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go on a surprise getaway?

A: Just do it! You won’t regret it.

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: This was a birthday present to myself, and it sounded like a lot of fun. Plus, I’ve been meaning to be more adventurous, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. I was looking to have a great experience, and I did for sure!

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: I was nervous because I’m pretty paranoid in general. I wasn’t sure if my plane tickets would get to me, or even be usable. I wasn’t sure if my hotel reservation would be waiting for me when I got there. I wasn’t sure this was a real company, since you always hear about the scams on the internet.

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: I really had no idea where I was going, but it was a very pleasant surprise, since I had never even been to California before!

image

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

A: If I’m being honest, the first thing that came to mind when thinking of San Francisco was the ever-present LGBT community (no offense meant). But it also brought to mind the ocean, beaches, and sunglasses.

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: It was unique because I didn’t have to worry about getting there or my hotel reservations. That was a completely new experience. It felt tailored to me because there was a lot of walking around the city to experience natural locations (parks, community gardens, etc.).

image

Q: What did you like most about your travel accommodations?

A: The staff of the Grand Hyatt were INCREDIBLE. The bed was enormous, and I had it all to myself! Being in a family of eight, I was never alone, so having the bed to myself - no, having the ROOM to myself - was absolutely phenomenal. It was also a higher-quality hotel than I’m used to because we couldn’t afford something like this growing up.

image

Q: What was your favorite experience that we recommended for you?

A: The Golden Gate Bridge. I wasn’t able to get to everything (I would’ve liked to get to Alcatraz), but the Golden Gate Bridge was by far the best part.

Q: What did you discover on your own (not on your itinerary) in your destination that you feel is share-worthy?

A: Honestly, I was too busy trying to hit points in the itinerary to do much personal exploration. I would recommend using Uber, though!

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: One of my favorite parts was simply the fact that if I ever had a question, Lillian answered IN A FLASH. It really put my mind at ease. My favorite part of being in San Francisco had to be the Golden Gate Bridge. Walking across was pretty surreal, and being able to look out across the bay at everything (Alcatraz, the city basically wrapping around the water, exclusive clubs/wharfs, etc.) was breathtaking.

image

Q: If you could do the trip over again, what would you do differently?

A: I didn’t wear the right shoes while exploring the city. I had comfortable shoes with me, and the shoes I wore were OK, but I went more for style instead of comfort. I would also walk around the actual city a little less and just get to the sights I want to explore.

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: A weekend - even a long weekend - isn’t enough time to explore a city like this, but it’s enough time to have a life-changing experience.

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: I haven’t stopped raving about Pack Up + Go since the moment I got back. I e-mailed everyone at work and made my family sit through my picture presentation. Everyone seems to like the idea. Hopefully, some of them will explore this option. I know I will keep coming back!

Q: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go on a surprise getaway?

A: I was hesitant, too. Is it a scam? Will my plane tickets work? Will my hotel reservation be waiting for me? What if I don’t like the destination? IT’S TOTALLY WORTH IT! There will always be things to do and experience no matter where you go. And yes, YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE. Take the trip!

Testimonial Tuesday: Christina + Rick

Q: Why did you sign up for your trip? What were you looking to get out of it?

A: I’d heard about surprise trips through various blogs, and I thought this would be a fun way liven up the usual travel experience (since my husband and I love doing unique and interesting things). I’m usually the one planning out everything whenever we take a trip, so it was really nice to really leave it in the hands of professionals.

Q: Did you have any hesitations about taking a surprise trip? Were you nervous?

A: We had absolutely no hesitations. My husband and I have traveled extensively, so we’ve learned to go with the flow when it comes to the unexpected. So, at least in this case, we’re sort of planning for the unexpected.

image

Q: Where did you guess you were going to travel? Were you surprised by the destination?

A: Considering our criteria and the distance limitations, we did narrow it down to a few likely candidates. Then, when we received the weather report, my husband got too curious and started looking up weather forecasts and stumbled upon the correct answer. We did keep it a “surprise” for ourselves, but we weren’t TOO surprised when we finally did open the envelope in the airport.

Q: Upon discovery of your destination, what were some of your perceptions about the city prior to your trip?

A: We were excited. We’d only heard good things from our family and friends who’ve visited Portland, and it was definitely a place that we’d planned on visiting. It fit a lot of our criteria, and we always like a quirky fun city.

image

Q: What made the trip feel unique and tailored to you?

A: Well, the city definitely matched the criteria and interests we’d filled out on the original questionnaire. Plus, we liked the suggestions included in our envelope.

Q: What did you like most about your travel accommodations?

A: Everyone we met there was so nice and helpful. We loved the ambiance of the hotel, especially the way we could play backgammon and chess in front of a crackling fire. We especially loved that it was so dog-friendly. Even though we didn’t bring a dog along, it was always so fun to see them in the common areas. Since it was our anniversary, there was a lovely card and a little gift waiting in our room. It made us feel very special and welcome. We loved all the little details that just added up to a great atmosphere. If we’re ever in Portland again, we’ll probably stay there again.

image

Q: What was your favorite experience that we recommended for you?

A: Definitely the Freakybuttrue Peculiarium. As soon as we saw it, we said, “We have to go check this out.” It was so quirky and random and fun. In fact, while checking out at a nearby store, it turns out even some locals hadn’t heard of it, so it was definitely a hidden gem.

Q: What did you discover on your own (not on your itinerary) in your destination that you feel is share-worthy?

A: We did an Underground Portland walking tour, going through the Shanghai tunnels. It’s unique, you get a good history lesson (and some supernatural thrills, if you’re into ghosts like my husband is), and it’s not too strenuous (or pricey). There are other tours through the same company, so if we ever went back, we’d try the other ones as well.

image

Q: What was your favorite part of your trip?

A: I don’t think we had a favorite per se. We mostly enjoyed getting away for a weekend in a wonderful city.

Q: What did you learn on your trip, or from your trip?

A: We learned how nice it was not to plan anything for once. Just show up!

Q: How would you describe Pack Up + Go and your experience to your friends and family?

A: Pack Up + Go is a nice mix of hand-holding and independence. The major stuff is planned (which saves a lot of headaches), but the rest is up to you, which gives you a lot of flexibility. Aside from showing up to the airport in time, there are no ridiculous 5am scrambles to get in some tour bus, just a nice open weekend in front of us.

Q: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go on a surprise getaway?

A: Don’t be. In our travels, we’ve found that every city, no matter how tiny or out-of-the-way, has something interesting to experience, as long as you’re open to it. Plus, with most decent hotels offering free wi-fi and everyone having smartphones, it’s not hard to find things to do, places to see, or restaurants to eat at even if you end up somewhere unexpected.
